Spanish is the native language of 496 million people, accounting for 6.3% of the world's population, according to the 2022 report presented by the Cervantes Institute. When speakers of Spanish as a foreign language are included, this figure reaches 595 million, which corresponds to 7.5% of the world's population.

The Department of Spanish Interpreting and Translation was established to contribute to the professionalization of translation studies in Turkey—in a context where translation studies have been recognized as an autonomous academic discipline since the last century—and to train educated, qualified personnel and researchers required during diplomatic, economic, and cultural activities between Turkey and the vast Spanish-speaking geography.

Our fundamental aims include training students who possess a broad perspective, can effectively use at least three languages, and are capable of developing cultural and economic relations between Turkey and Spain, as well as other Spanish-speaking countries. We also aim to ensure the department's academic competitiveness at the international level through joint scientific studies carried out using international funds, to stand out among similar departments in other countries in this regard, and to achieve the status of a recognized and successful department through Erasmus and other international agreements.
